Interview - AI Impacts on Product Orgs

A few weeks ago, I was invited to speak with Mustafa Kapadia of Echo Point on the Masters of Product show. It was great to explore and talk about the effect AI is having on the role of product management and the world of tech.

Here were some of the key points in our discussion:

• Using automation and AI together

  At scale, working with AI requires some automation and integration with other systems. Without this, someone has to sit in the middle, moving data back and forth. 

• How the product management role is changing

  AI is impacting the PM role along with most other roles. With the help of AI, we can be more productive, and it's become expected that we'll all do more work.

• How organizations need to change to adapt and adopt AI

  Some companies are still unsure about the use of AI by their employees, but I guarantee at least some of their employees are sharing information with LLM chatbots. Companies need to think ahead and have policies that will allow us to leverage these tools officially.

• How PMs can acquire new skills around AI

  You'll likely be left behind or overlooked if you don't learn about AI, how to write well-performing prompts, and how to connect these tools. In many cases, we can leverage our time far better with the help of AI. 

If you’ve struggled to get results from large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Claud, Llama, or Bert, something I discussed in the interview that I’d like to point out is multi-step prompting. Just like you might do with a large task you’re working on, breaking a job into smaller parts to feed to an LLM is basically a cheat code.

Sticking with the example I gave in the interview, you might prompt the LLM to summarize all user reviews. Then, pass those summaries to another prompt to determine the sentiment. Next, you’d feed all of the results into another prompt, having it categorize them, and so on.
